Last summer, the Bozeman Public Library was a bit quieter than usual. The families who typically fill our spaces—gathering for programs, storytimes, and summer adventures—were noticeably fewer.
For the first time in years, free summer lunches from HRDC were not available at the Library. Rising property values in the surrounding neighborhood caused the Library to lose eligibility for federal reimbursement as a meal site. As a result, no lunches were served here—and the impact rippled across the community. Attendance at the Library’s summer learning programs dropped by 40%. Citywide, 40% fewer meals reached the kids who rely on them most.
It became painfully clear: without access to free lunches, many families couldn’t make the Library part of their summer. And when kids miss out on summer learning, they start school already behind. That loss doesn’t just affect the summer months; it creates a gap that follows them into the classroom.
That’s why the Bozeman Library Friends and Foundation has partnered with HRDC to bring the Free Summer Lunch Program back in 2025. We’ve committed to funding this program with donations because every child deserves access to nutritious food—and every family deserves access to enriching educational opportunities
When families come to the Library for lunch, they don’t just find a meal—they find a community. They find storytimes, hands-on STEAM projects, science experiments, and art activities. They find books to take home, friendly staff to guide them, and a safe, welcoming place where their children can grow, imagine, and belong. Parents connect. Kids make new friends. And learning doesn’t stop just because school is out.
This is what makes the Bozeman Public Library extraordinary. It’s more than shelves and books—it’s a place of possibility, equity, and connection. And when the community is in need, the Library responds.
Thanks to generous donations and the generosity of Intercity Radiology PC, Bozeman Health, and Yellowstone Orthodontics, we’re already more than two-thirds of the way to funding this summer’s program. Now, we’re working to close the final gap. With your support, we can ensure that no child goes hungry at the Library this summer—and that every family has the chance to discover all the resources waiting for them here.
