Libraries are more than just books—they are vital lifelines for knowledge, connection, and opportunity, especially in small and rural communities. However, these essential services face challenges, including insufficient funding and growing demands for digital resources. Now, Montanans have a powerful new way to support libraries across the state. The Montana Library Association (MLA) is proud to introduce Montanans for Libraries, an advocacy platform uniting library supporters to champion better resources and equitable access for all Montanans.
Why Libraries Need Your Voice
Montana’s 746 libraries are lifelines for residents, providing access to free eBooks, research databases, interlibrary loans, and genealogy tools. Libraries help bridge the digital divide, offering internet access and technology training for those who may not otherwise have it. Libraries bring communities together and empower individuals, but without strong public support, these services risk being diminished or lost.
Montanans for Libraries aims to address these challenges by advocating for sustained investment in libraries. This includes state and local funding to maintain shared catalog systems, expand digital collections, and support library staff who make these resources accessible. Advocacy also focuses on ensuring libraries are equipped to meet evolving needs, from digital transformation to specialized community programs.
Advocacy for the Future of Montana Libraries
Montanans for Libraries is currently focused on the upcoming legislative session, advocating for legislation that strengthens statewide resource-sharing programs. MontanansForLibraries.org will be the central hub for updates, tools, and ways to take action as the MLA works to ensure equitable access to library resources for all Montanans, no matter where they live.
